In this project, a pragmatic integration approach was developed to streamline component data management and accelerate manufacturing planning within a customized ERP environment.
Context
AMS is a long-established provider of electronic manufacturing services (EMS) in northern Germany, offering high-precision development, electronics, mechanics, and assembly from a single source.
With more than 40 years of experience and a team of around 100 specialists, AMS stands for engineering excellence and reliable industrial partnerships.
Challenge
To improve component management and manufacturing planning, AMS aimed to integrate electronic part data from a limited number of large system suppliers—some offering databases with more than 10 million components—into their customized Odoo ERP system.
A direct full-scale integration, however, would have required significant effort in terms of API integration, data harmonization, and long-term maintenance, reducing flexibility and increasing system complexity.
Solution Approach
Instead of implementing a fully integrated data pipeline, a pragmatic alternative approach was developed that leverages existing supplier interfaces while minimizing system complexity.
The solution focuses on enabling efficient, user-driven data transfer directly from supplier product pages into the ERP system, without requiring deep technical integration.
Implementation
A lightweight browser plugin was developed to allow users to capture relevant component data directly from supplier websites.
Combined with a smart import mechanism, selected data can be transferred via clipboard and imported seamlessly into the ERP system through a dedicated interface in the frontend.
The solution integrates directly into the existing BOM (Bill of Materials) workflow, ensuring that imported data is immediately usable within the manufacturing planning process.
Particular attention was given to usability and process alignment, enabling efficient handling of large component datasets without disrupting established workflows.
Results and Impact
The project provides a flexible and efficient approach to integrating supplier data into the ERP system without the need for complex API integrations.
By avoiding full-scale system integration, implementation effort and maintenance overhead were significantly reduced while preserving adaptability to different supplier structures.
The solution improves speed and usability in component management and supports more efficient manufacturing planning processes.
Overall, it establishes a pragmatic and scalable foundation for handling large volumes of external product data in alignment with internal workflows.
